[Neuropostdocs] Opportunities for postdocs

Dear Fellow postdoc

Being a postdoc can be a challenging experience: short, fixed-term contracts at the transition between graduate research and academia or the wider world, an experience that provides a deeply uncertain future, coming at a time in life when many are going through important life events such as getting married or starting and raising young families. In addition, postdocs have unique training requirements to make these career transitions that often lack formal provisions and tend to be provided in an uneven manner.

Postdoctoral associations can provide a forum to raise issues, develop strategies to address challenges and provide a collective voice to communicate with the college administration in order to enact change. However, to my knowledge, except the postdoctoral association in the Institute for Genomic Biology, no such organization exists at UIUC.

To understand current requirements, I will be arranging a virtual meeting via zoom on Wed May 6, at 10.30 AM to discuss the current status of postdocs and opportunities for developing initiatives. If you already have some form of organization, if this sounds attractive to you, or you would like to participate, please contact me at sjb287 at illinois.edu<mailto:sjb287 at illinois.edu> as I would be interested to hear from you. A link with an invite and password for the meeting will be sent out on request. Please share with anyone you feel may be interested and I look forward to hearing from you.

I hope you are coping well with the lockdown

Best

Steven Burgess
