"Circadian Control of Sleep and Wakefulness"
The brain contains a biological clock, the suprachiasmatic nucleus. This
clock is reset by light falling on the retina, and measures the day-night
cycles accurately. However, the needs of the individual may require that
activity patterns be adjusted in ways that the clock cannot anticipate,
e.g., for humans, shift work, odd meal times, stress, etc. We have
unraveled some of the circuitry in the brain that allows the clock time to
be flexibly adapted to the needs of the individual.
