The brain contains a biological clock, the suprachiasmatic nucleus. This clock is reset by light falling on the retina, and measures the day-night cycles accurately. However, the needs of the individual may require that activity patterns be adjusted in ways that the clock cannot anticipate, e.g., for humans, shift work, odd meal times, stress, etc. We have unraveled some of the circuitry in the brain that allows the clock time to be flexibly adapted to the needs of the individual.
