Conservation of the Giant Tasmanian Freshwater Lobster (Astacopsis gouldi)
The Tasmanian Giant Freshwater Lobster (Astacopsis gouldi) is the
worlds largest freshwater crustacean, attaining a size of 14 LBs and
3 feet in length from claws to tail. The lobster lives in the north
of Tasmania, which has been heavily impacted since the arrival of
Europeans in the early 19th century. Habitat degradation and
overfishing have led to the species being listed as 'Vulnerable' on
the National and State Threatened Species lists. Recovery of the
animal depends on reducing illegal fishing and the protection and
repair of habitat. Awareness is seen as the single most important
aspect of the lobster's recovery. An awareness and population
monitoring program has been running successfully since late 1997.
