Subject: Please distribute: resources and funding opportunities from NINDS, the NIH Blueprint, and the BRAIN Initiative

Dear Neuroscience Training Programs,

I am writing to alert you to several resources and funding opportunities from NINDS, the NIH Blueprint, and the BRAIN Initiative. Please forward these opportunities to your students and postdocs, as well as any other colleagues as appropriate. See below for information on a new podcast for trainees, reissue of the undergraduate ENDURE R25 program, the Blueprint D-SPAN F99/K00 program, the BRAIN K99/R00 program, NINDS diversity K awards, and a call for nominations for the 2020 Landis Award for Mentoring.

  *   New Podcast from NINDS!

Building Up the Nerve is a podcast from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for neuroscience trainees that takes you through the life cycle of a grant from idea to award at NINDS with the people who make it happen. We know that applying for NIH funding can be daunting, but we're here to help-it's our job! Subscribe today at Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts. New episodes will be released every other week. http://ninds.buzzsprout.com

  *   ENDURE FOA Reissue

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Blueprint for Neuroscience Research has reissued an FOA for receipt of new and renewal applications for its research education program for neuroscience focused undergraduates. The overall objective of this funding opportunity will be to increase the number of undergraduate participants from diverse groups who successfully enter and complete Ph.D. degree programs in the neurosciences. To accomplish this goal, this initiative would support the development of collaborative research education partnerships to increase participants' awareness and interest in the neurosciences, develop participants' scientific knowledge and research skills that would allow them to progress and transition to more advanced neuroscience related research education and training activities, and establish working networks within existing Ph.D. degree granting and NIH-supported predoctoral T32 neuroscience programs. https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-NS-20-015.html

  *   Blueprint D-SPAN F99/K00

This two-phase award will facilitate completion of the doctoral dissertation and transition of talented graduate students to strong neuroscience research postdoctoral positions, and will provide career development opportunities relevant to their long-term career goal of becoming independent neuroscience researchers. For the F99/K00 award, individuals who are from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in neuroscience research may receive up to 6 years combined support for both phases, which includes up to 2 years in the F99 fellowship phase and up to 4 years in the K00 career development phase. https://neuroscienceblueprint.nih.gov/training/nih-blueprint-d-span-award-f99k00

  *   BRAIN Initiative K99/R00 Reissued

The BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity has been reissued as RFA-NS-19-043 and RFA-NS-19-044. This program is designed to enhance biomedical research workforce diversity and foster a strong cohort of new, highly skilled and well trained, NIH-supported, independent investigators from diverse backgrounds (including nationally underrepresented groups) working in research areas supported by the BRAIN Initiative, as highlighted in BRAIN 2025: A Scientific Vision. The BRAIN Initiative K99/R00 award is intended for individuals from diverse backgrounds (including nationally underrepresented groups) who are working in research areas supported by the BRAIN Initiative, who have no more than five years of postdoctoral research experience, and who require at least 12 months of mentored research training and career development (K99 phase) before transitioning to the independent research (R00) phase of the program. https://braininitiative.nih.gov/brain-programs/training

  * NINDS Diversity K Awards for Postdocs and Junior Faculty

The NINDS Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity in Neuroscience Research K22 supports diverse postdocs to develop their independent research skills through a two-phase program: an initial mentored research experience followed by a period of independent research. https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Funding/Training-Career-Development/Award/K22-NINDS-Advanced-Postdoctoral-Career-Transition-Award

The NINDS Faculty Development Award to Promote Diversity in Neuroscience Research K01 provides junior faculty in the first 3 years of a faculty tenure-track or equivalent position support and protected time (up to five years) for an intensive, supervised career development experience in neuroscience research. https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Funding/Training-Career-Development/Award/K01-NINDS-Faculty-Development-Award-Promote-Diversity

  * Landis Award for Mentoring Nominations Due

Each year, NINDS will select up to five (5) Landis Awardees from among faculty members who have shown dedication to superior mentorship and training in neuroscience research. Awardees will receive $100,000 (direct costs), in the form of a supplement to an existing NINDS grant, to support their efforts to foster the career advancement of additional trainees. Current or former trainees can nominate faculty members who served as their mentors, and nominees will then be invited to submit additional supporting information. Because outstanding mentors exist across career stages, NINDS will rotate annual requests for nominations for junior, mid-career, and senior faculty. NINDS is now accepting nominations for Senior Faculty for the 2020 Landis Award for Outstanding Mentorship. Nominations are due on December 1, 2019. https://www.ninds.nih.gov/Funding/About-Funding/landis-award-for-outstanding-mentorship
