a leading creator of sequencing technology and related software
applications, on Thursday (March 2). They are interested in getting
connected with MS students, PhD students, and postdocs in a variety of
fields, so I thought you might like to share information about the event
with grad students in Neuroscience. I am attaching a flier here and am
including a full description below my signature.
This event would be great for students who are actively job-seeking as
well as those who are just interested in learning a bit more about
careers in industry.
Thank you,
Derek Attig, PhD

*Who will be there?*
/Steve Caldwell (UIUC Alum), Sr Manager, QA, Life Cycle Management Dept. /
In a nutshell, I help solve problems. My role at Illumina is to ensure
our Madison, WI. manufacturing site produces high quality enzymes. My
main focus is to help groups figure out how to identify key issues and
work through solving their problems. Prior to Illumina I helped other
companies combine technical and human-focused solutions towards solving
problems. My academic background combines the scientific discipline of
Microbiology with the human-focused discipline of Training and Development.
/Anu Khanna (UIUC Postdoc) - Sr Scientist, Genomic Applications Dept./
In short, I have my Ph.D in Molecular genetics and completed my Post Doc
in functional Genomics at UIUC. I helped in starting microarray
consortium for the soybean community. After UIUC, I joined Epicentre
Biotechnologies in Madison, WI which then transitioned to an Illumina
company. I’ve been working in industry for over 13 years and I’m excited
to share my experiences with you!
/Katelyn Michelini (UIUC Alum), Sr Field Applications Scientist, Field
Applications Dept. /
In 2008, I completed my Master of Science in Entomology at UIUC. I
studied senescence in Drosophila Melanogaster. Following my education,
I worked at the University of Chicago for the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute, where I ran a sequencing core. Utilizing the skills learned
at the University of Chicago, I then embarked on my career at Illumina.
I am currently a Senior Field Applications Scientist with Illumina. My
role largely focuses on training new customers to use to use our
systems, troubleshooting issues in the field, and working on internal
projects.
/Lindsey Eaton, Campus Recruiter, Talent Acquisition Dept. /
My role at Illumina is an exciting one! I get to connect the best and
brightest to a company that is changing the world for the better. I
enjoy campus recruiting because I have the opportunity to develop and
help students, at all degree levels, move forward in their career. I
graduated with a degree in Biology from the University of San Diego in
2005 and fell into recruitment. My path consists of biotech recruiting,
big 4 accounting recruitment, overseas travel, and now, working for one
of the smartest companies in the world.
*More about Illumina*
Illumina is global leader in creating, developing and marketing next
generation sequencing technology, and intricate software that runs on
our instruments and in the cloud. At the most fundamental level, we
enable our customers to read and understand genetic variations by using
our technology. We strive to make our solutions increasingly simple,
more accessible, and always reliable for a wide variety of individuals
and industries. As a result, our technology is being using in ground
breaking discoveries that were unimaginable even a few years ago – and
are making their way into patient treatment. We hire many undergrad and
graduate level students in a wide variety of disciplines such as
engineering (BioE, ChemE, EE, CS, CE, ME, etc), chemistry,
bioinformatics, computational biology, genetics, molecular biology and
the list goes on. We have a very diverse group of people who work for
Illumina so we can solve problems that have never been solved before. We
need to continue that diversity – it’s one of the attributes that makes
us innovative and collaborative. We are headquartered in sunny San Diego
but have core offices in Madison, WI, the Bay Area (San Francisco), and
globally.
