Directions to the Outdoor Recreation Center on Homer Lake at the Salt
Fork River Forest Preserve.
There are two ways to go. One is more scenic and I'll start
with that. Get on main street in Urbana and head East. Main Street
ends just outside of town in a slight curve to the left.
-When it ends take a right and continue east (this is route 150). Go
11.2 miles (through mayview, through St. Joseph) into Ogden.
-There is a stop sign here, and a bar called the Pink House *. Go
right (heading South on route 49).
-Go 3.7 miles and the road will descend a slight slope (hey, it's not
all flat around here) . At the bottom turn right on South Homer Lake
Rd. The field just to your left as you enter is an old Native
American Campground and arrowheads are often found here. The road
follows the Salt Fork River which is one of the cleanest rivers in
Illinois and supports an endangered species of fresh water clams.
-Go 1.5 miles on this narrow winding road to the entrance of the Salt
Fork River Forrest Preserve.
-Head left into the park and take the left road at the fork. This
will wind around the lake, and over the dam into the park ending at a
parking lot for the Outdoor Recreation Center. It is a fairly new
building with a big deck over-looking the lake. There are several
hiking trails that head off from this point, and earlier in the
season you can rent canoes here for paddling around the lake. For a
more detailed map of the park and pictures of the building you can go
to http://www.ccfpd.org/saltfork.htm.
The less scenic route takes 74 east and exits at 197 (Ogden).
Head south and you intersect the directions above at the intersection
with the bar called the Pink House (asterik above).
